National Center for Teaching Thinking

I have the opportunity to attend a week-long seminar (one of two) in Newton Centre, MA this winter (2006) as part of the National Center for Teaching Thinking.

The goals of these seminars for each participant are twofold:

bullet
To develop an understanding of the latest work, both research-based and practical, on integrating thinking skill instruction in the content areas and/or on assessing students' critical thinking abilities, and
bullet
To apply relevant research about thinking skill instruction and/or assessment studied in the seminar to curriculum design issues and assessment needs in their own educational context.

Developing a Thinking-Based Curriculum will cover these topics:
bullet
Designing thinking-skill curricular objectives that can guide both classroom instruction and assessment
bullet
Instructional strategies that enhance thinking-based learning: effective questioning, engaging active student thinking about the content, prompting self-directing metacognitive reflection
bullet
Fostering effective lesson-design for infusing instruction in thinking skills into content instruction
bullet
Techniques that help student translate good thinking into good writing
bullet
Effective assessment techniques to use in the thinking-based classroom
